Designing Networks

Network Communication Cables, Inc    has the expertise and a wide range of resources available to insure your network design will provide the greatest advantage in the cost vs. future growth spectrum. We can assist you in designing a Network system that will fulfill your needs far into the future.

Installing Cabling and Hardware

Category 5 installation shall not exceed the 100 meter (328 ft.) standard. All data cables are to be installed in a point to point fashion, no splices, cross connects, or patching of any kind. The cable  will be terminated at the distribution point, (computer room/computer closet) using category 5 or higher, 568A/B 110-type connection patch panels with eight (8) pin RJ45 connectors or ports in the front. Typically a horizontal wire manager is installed for each patch panel. The patch panels will be clearly labeled with the same number and or letter as the station jack.

100 Base-T Cabling

100 Base-T network connections require Category 5 UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cables as specified in the IEEE 802.3u standard for 100Base-TX. As for 10Base-T, either Category 3 or Category 5 UTP cable is needed. The cable should at least have two pairs of twisted insulated copper conductors bound in a single plastic sheath. One pair of wires is used for transmission; the other pair is used for collision detection and receive. Make sure also that the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Electronic Testing Laboratories (ETL) have already certified the cable.

Cable Lengths Within a Network

At the most, the cable length can be up to 100 meters (328 feet) for Category 5 UTP cable that meets ANSI/EIA/TIA-568-A building wiring standards. For instance, an entire cable segment may be used as follows:
  • 3 meters (10 feet) between a computer and the wall outlet,
  • 90 meters (295 feet) between the wall outlet and the wiring closet, and
  • 6 meters (20 feet) between the hub and the patch panel.

Cable Specifications

Electrical requirements of the Category 5 cable are given in the table below.
Specification Category 5
Number of pairs 2 or 4 pairs
Impedance 100 * ± 15%
Mutual capacitance at 1 kHz 5.6 nƒ per 100 meters
Maximum attenuation (dB per 100 meters, at 20° C) at 16 MHz: 8.2
at 31 MHz: 11.7
at 100 MHz : 22
NEXT loss (dB minimum) at 16 MHz: 44
at 31 MHz: 39
at 100 MHz : 32
